Parenting

Parenting books are outstanding! Someone’s done all the research and they are going to tell me everything I need to know to raise superstars, isn’t that right?

Honestly, I do love parenting books and I read a ton of them. The major problems I have with parenting books are actually quite simple.

  1. Not enough time. I don’t even have time to simple self-care sometimes, and we want to add some reading and learning into the mix?
  2. What did the book say, again? Hey, a lot of the material makes a TON of sense when I’m reading it. But trying to apply it during a meltdown is practically impossible. It’s like reading about music theory, and then expecting to play piano. Understanding and practice are two entirely different skill sets.

So here I am, trying to solve these two problems above. I remember from my college years that to commit to memory the information, some techniques we were taught were copying notes, and teach backs. Well, that’s what this mostly will be.

By writing the content in my own words, I’m hoping that it will help me remember. By trying to teach them to you, dear reader, you are also helping me commit them to memory.

Hey, friends, if I am reading these books anyway to make my tiny terrorists into nice human beings, there may as well be some benefit for all. To help us all along in the top two challenges with parenting books is:

  1. I will only pick bite sized topics, so you’re not reading an entire book to gain some useful knowledge.
  2. I will add concrete examples of actual life situations, so we practice the skill in our minds and be better equipped when it happens in real life.
